Do Bahraini citizens need a Schengen visa in 2026?

Yes. As of 30 September 2026, Bahraini nationals still need a Schengen visa; of the GCC states only the UAE is visa-exempt. In July 2026 the Gulf Daily News reported that a Bahraini parliamentary committee is still pursuing a reciprocal waiver.

The big advantage most people miss: under European Commission Implementing Decision C(2024) 2692 (22 April 2024), Bahraini nationals living in Bahrain who apply in Bahrain receive a 5-year multiple-entry visa, even on their first application, if they meet the entry conditions. If the passport expires sooner, the visa ends 3 months before the passport does, so renew your passport first if it has less than about five years left.

Saudi, Kuwaiti, Omani and Qatari nationals living in Bahrain follow the standard "cascade" (shorter visas first, longer ones with a good travel history).

Each embassy sets its own final checklist, but Bahrain centres typically ask for:

Everyone:

  1. Signed application form (completed online for most countries).
  2. Recent 3.5 × 4.5 cm photo, light background.
  3. Original passport (3 months' validity after return, issued within 10 years, 2 blank pages) plus copies of earlier Schengen visas.
  4. Return flight reservation (a booking, not a paid ticket, until the visa is approved).
  5. Hotel bookings or proof of accommodation for the whole trip.
  6. Travel medical insurance, minimum EUR 30,000, covering all Schengen states and every day of the trip.
  7. Bank statement: 3 months for Bahraini nationals; 6 months, bank-stamped, for non-Bahrainis (per Bahrain centre checklists).

Employees: a stamped, signed employer letter stating position, joining date, salary and approved leave (some embassies want it attested by the Bahrain Chamber of Commerce and Industry).

Business owners: a valid Commercial Registration (Sijilat extract) with an English translation.

Non-Bahraini residents: CPR copy and residence permit. Required validity differs (Switzerland: 1 month after return; Czech Republic and Spain: 3 months), so keep at least 3 months left on your residence permit after your return date.

Arabic documents must be translated into English.

Common refusal reasons and how to avoid them

Article 32 of the EU Visa Code sets the grounds for refusal. The most common:

  • Purpose not justified: make sure your itinerary and bookings match, date for date.
  • Insufficient means: a steady bank history beats a large deposit made days before applying.
  • Doubts about return: employer letter, valid residence permit or CR show your ties to Bahrain.
  • Non-compliant insurance: under EUR 30,000 or not covering every day.
  • Past overstay of the 90/180-day rule.

EES and ETIAS: what changes for you

  • EES (Entry/Exit System): started progressively on 12 October 2025 and fully operational since 10 April 2026. On your first entry, fingerprints and a facial image are recorded at the border instead of a passport stamp, so allow extra time at the airport.
  • ETIAS: a travel authorisation only for visa-exempt travellers. It does not apply to Bahraini citizens or residents who travel on a Schengen visa, and it was not yet operating at the time of writing.
