Quick answer: Until 15 February 2027, Bahraini citizens can visit Azerbaijan without a visa for up to 30 days per visit (tourism, up to 3 entries). Bahrain residents with a residence permit valid for at least 6 months can get a 30-day tourist visa on arrival at Azerbaijan's international airports, or apply online for the ASAN e-visa. Gulf Air flies nonstop Bahrain–Baku about twice a week this winter. December in Baku is cool (around 5–9 °C), while Shahdag is the place for snow; its ski season usually opens in mid-December.

Azerbaijan visa for Bahrainis and Bahrain residents

Bahraini citizens: visa-free until 15 February 2027

Under a temporary scheme announced by Azerbaijan's State Migration Service, citizens of Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Oman and Kuwait holding ordinary passports can enter visa-free from 15 February 2026 to 15 February 2027:

  • up to 3 entries, up to 30 days per visit, for tourism;
  • if you stay more than 15 days, you must register with the migration service (your hotel or we can help).

What applies after 15 February 2027 has not been announced; we will update this guide when it is.

Bahrain residents (non-Bahraini)

The same notice lets holders of a Bahrain residence permit valid for at least 6 months get a single-entry 30-day tourist visa on arrival at Azerbaijan's international airports, in the same period. The notice does not list excluded nationalities or the fee, so we confirm both for your passport before you book.

Alternative: the ASAN e-visa on the official portal evisa.gov.az, with standard processing of 3 working days and an urgent 3-hour option. When we checked, the portal showed a standard fee of US$20 (urgent costs more). Eligibility depends on your nationality.

Our tip: if your residence permit expires within 6 months of your travel date, apply for the e-visa instead of relying on the visa on arrival.

Flights from Bahrain to Baku

  • Nonstop: Gulf Air resumed Bahrain–Baku on 1 June 2026 and keeps the route in its winter 2026–27 schedule, about twice a week (Thursdays and Saturdays in published schedules). Flying time is about 3 hours; Baku is 1 hour ahead.
  • One stop: flydubai via Dubai, and other Gulf carriers via their hubs.
  • Combine with Georgia: Gulf Air's Tbilisi flight continues from Baku on the same aircraft, so a Baku + Tbilisi trip is easy to plan. See Georgia or Azerbaijan?

Regional airspace closures this year changed several schedules. Always check the live schedule before booking; we confirm your flight before you pay.

Azerbaijan in December and January: weather

PlaceDecember (high / low)January (high / low)What to expect
Baku9.4 / 4.7 °C7.3 / 2.9 °CCool and often windy; city sightseeing, museums, the boulevard
Gabala7.0 / −1.4 °C4.4 / −3.9 °CCold mountain air, forests, chance of snow
Shahdag (ski resort)well below 0 °Cwell below 0 °CSnow and skiing once the season opens

Baku and Gabala figures are long-term averages (NOAA and national climate records); Shahdag has no official weather station, so expect it to be far colder than Baku, especially at the top lifts.

Packing for winter: a warm coat, gloves and a hat, waterproof shoes, and thermal layers for Shahdag. Baku's wind makes it feel colder than the thermometer says.

Snow and skiing: Shahdag and Tufandag

Winter in the Shahdag mountains, north of Baku

Shahdag describes its slopes as suitable "from beginners to seasoned pros", so families and first-timers can take lessons. Opening dates for 2026–27 have not been announced and depend on snow, so snow on National Day (16–17 December) is likely but not guaranteed. For a sure snow trip, the second half of December through February is safer.

Top things to do in Azerbaijan in winter

  • Icherisheher (Baku Old City): UNESCO-listed walled old town with the Maiden Tower and the Palace of the Shirvanshahs.
  • Flame Towers and Highland Park (Dagustu): the best view over Baku and the Caspian, lit up at night.
  • Baku Boulevard: the seafront promenade, cafés and shopping.
  • Gabala: Tufandag cable car, mountain views and Nohur Lake.
  • Shahdag: skiing, snowboarding, snow play for children and mountain hotels.

A 6-day winter itinerary (GoTrips suggestion)

  • Day 1: Arrive in Baku; evening walk on the boulevard and in the Old City.
  • Day 2: Baku: Icherisheher, the Maiden Tower, the Shirvanshahs' Palace, Highland Park at sunset.
  • Day 3: Drive to Shahdag (about 3 hours); afternoon on the snow.
  • Day 4: Shahdag: ski lesson or snow activities; overnight in the mountains.
  • Day 5: Gabala (or back to Baku): Tufandag cable car and Nohur Lake.
  • Day 6: Back to Baku for shopping and departure.

With 9–10 days: add Tbilisi (Georgia) using Gulf Air's Baku–Tbilisi leg, or Georgia's winter resorts.

Families: choose a mountain hotel with ski-in access or a kids' snow area; keep road days short.

Honeymooners: Baku's sea-view hotels plus two quiet nights in Gabala.

How much does an Azerbaijan trip from Bahrain cost?

The total depends on your travel dates (National Day and January are the busiest), the airline, hotel category, ski passes and equipment, and how many people travel. Flights and Shahdag hotels are the biggest items. Send your dates and number of travellers and we quote a complete package in Bahraini dinars, so you can compare it like for like.

Is Azerbaijan safe for travellers from Bahrain?

Baku, Gabala and Shahdag are popular with Gulf families. The UK Foreign Office (updated 23 October 2026) advises against travel only to the areas near the Armenian border and some south-western districts, not to Baku, Gabala or Shahdag. It also notes that regional tension can close airspace at short notice. Check your own government's advice before you travel; we brief every traveller before departure.
